Manage editorial office for a medical journal. Provide administrative assistance to Editor, other journal editors, and editorial board members. Coordinate the editorial and peer review processes between authors, reviewers, and editors. Coordinate the publication planning of the journal with the Editor and JAMA Network editorial staff. Responsible for the daily operation of medical journal office.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Independently organizes workflow, reports, and editorial office procedures following policies and procedures established by the JAMA Network journals.
Coordinates daily operation of medical journal office, including author manuscript/content submission and editorial and peer review processes.
Serves as main point of contact for Editor and as a liaison with authors, reviewers, editors, and editorial operations staff at the JAMA Network office in Chicago.
Manages communications with authors and reviewers and the journal’s email box.
Coordinates author outreach activities with the JAMA Network office.
Facilitates efficient functioning of the journal by monitoring flow of manuscripts and other content from receipt to final publication, inventories, submission to acceptance and acceptance to publication turnaround times, and editorial deadlines, and peer reviewer performance.
Provides technical/system assistance to editors, authors, and reviewers.
Schedules and participates in editorial meetings.
Sets editorial deadlines for editors, authors, and reviewers in coordination with Editor and JAMA Network procedures.
Administers specific types of budget expenditures.
Coordinates editorial board activities, communications, and meetings, and as needed in conjunction with the JAMA Network office in Chicago.
Understands and implements quality control and editorial procedures and policies.
Advises editors of pertinent developments and needs for policy and procedural changes and implements changes as needed.
Plans weekly online first and monthly print/online issues with the Editor and editorial staff in the JAMA Network Office, following editorial procedures and policies, and meeting scheduled deadlines.
Responsible for enforcement of content submission guidelines and editorial and production schedules while maintaining highest quality standards.
Assists authors, reviewers, and editors to follow editorial procedures and policies.
Prepares reports and analyses as requested.
Works with JAMA Network staff to implement new features and editorial plans.
Uses the web-based systems provided by the JAMA Network for manuscript submission and peer review and journal publication planning.
Participates in telephone, web-based, and in-person meetings, as needed, with the JAMA Network editorial staff.
Other duties as assigned.
Education, Experience, Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
College degree in English/Communications, Business/Public Administration, or Management Information systems.
Four years of directly related experience, including editorial office or academic/medical office management, preferred.
Experience with and/or education in information systems management or equivalent
Knowledge of administrative and management principles, practices, and procedures.
Knowledge of editorial, peer review, and publication processes.
Knowledge of medical writing, editing, and publishing.
Familiarity with AMA Manual of Style, a plus.
Knowledge of medical terminology.
Familiarity with research methodology and statistical terms, a plus.
Knowledge of database management.
Good skills in coordinating review process.
Good skills in verbal and written communication.
Good skills in database usage.
Good computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office suite of software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Adobe software or similar
Good skills in library/bibliographic research and Internet-based searches.
