POSITION SUMMARY

The Society of Interventional Radiology has a new Journal Managing Editor opening with tremendous growth potential on its highly esteemed scholarly journal. SIR is looking for skilled organizers and editors with an eye for detail, in-depth understanding of the peer-review process, and a strong sense of scientific language. This role, which is pivotal to the success of this best-in-class journal, will provide an opportunity to strengthen project, volunteer and vendor management skills, while fostering collaboration with other SIR staff on journal-related projects. 

The Journal Managing Editor ensures the successful publication of the Society’s scholarly journal, Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology (JVIR), with support from the Director of Publications. The Journal Managing Editor oversees the journal’s daily operations, ensuring that all regular and special issues, supplements, approved initiatives, and online ancillaries are carried out, deadlines are met, and journal quality requirements are fulfilled. 

POSITION FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Manages daily journal operations to ensure the timely production of the SIR’s monthly print and online peer-reviewed scientific journal. 
  • Reviews and edits proofs and manuscripts to ensure that they adhere to style, communicate concepts clearly, and are free from typos and grammatical errors. 
  • Provides managerial, editorial and production expertise and oversight for the journal, special projects, and annual meeting supplement, coordinating content with other staff, and managing freelance copyediting and proofreading.
  • Supports the Editor in establishing editorial policies and procedures and implementing editorial strategies and standards for the journal.
  • Oversees peer review management vendor.
  • Develops the journal budget with support from the director of publications.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Working with Director of Publications, Editor-in-Chief and Publisher, plans and prepares reports on journal metrics, achievements and new initiatives for the editorial board, society leadership and others. 
  • Works with Director of Publications to showcase the journal and its content via SIR communications channels.
  • Ensures online JVIR assets are accurate, current and of value to users.
  • Manages agreements with other organizations to place their abstracts in journal, overseeing production process to ensure quality control and timely publication.
  • Manages the publication of articles resulting from Annual Meeting abstracts and late-breaking abstracts.
  • Supports consultant throughout peer review management process, using the journal database and following peer review processes.
  • Ad hoc activities as assigned.


Requirements

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES 

  • Excellent organizational, problem solving, and language editing skills.
  • Ability to independently and proactively anticipate, plan for, and meet current and upcoming needs. 
  • Proficiency in project management; ability to juggle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Clear evidence of leadership ability.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to exercise good judgment, tact, and diplomacy.
  • Ability to achieve a balance of quality and quantity of work output. Understands and adheres to publishing schedule deadlines

EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, or related field

EXPERIENCE

  • A minimum of 6 years of progressively responsible experience working in a journal editorial office or similar environment.

WORKING CONDITIONS / PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The Journal Managing Editor works in a small, fast-paced open office environment with moderate noise levels. Use of phones and computers for extended periods of time. Utilize office equipment and communication technologies for conference calls and teleconference meetings/webinars. Requires general mobility to move through the facility. Ability to lift up to 25 pounds. Frequent interaction with internal staff and physician members/board via phone, in person, email and other mediums. Normal sitting and standing activities for an office environment. Some travel primarily for Annual Membership.

Special note regarding COVID-19: Candidates for the Journal Managing Editor position are expected to work from home during the next few months and may have flexibility to continue to work partly from home as we transition back to the office.
